Description
Presented is a handsome American coin silver milk pitcher or creamer. Thispiece was made by Shreve, Brown & Co and dates to around 1855-1860. The
pitcher is done in a lovely classical form, with beaded decoration around the
rim and a scrolled handle. The pitcher stands on three textured paw form feet
with acanthus leaf decorations where they join the body, all very detailed and
crisp. The interior of the pitcher is spotlessly clean. This is either a large
creamer or a small milk pitcher, though of course you can use it for whatever
you like, gravy, syrup, etc. The front of the pitcher, beneath the spout, has a
monogram of SHS in fancy Gothic script.
This piece is in great overall condition. There is a single dent, more of a
ding really, on the side of the pitcher, about midway between the widest point
of the body and the bottom. This dent could easily be removed. The shape that
appears above the monogram in the photo is not actually a decoration or existing
mark, it is merely a reflection of the beaded design around the rim. There are
no splits, no leaks, no monogram removals, and no repairs.
The pitcher is stamped on the underside with the maker's mark for Shreve,
Brown & Co as well as Coin for the purity of the silver (900) and
Boston.
The pitcher is about 6 3/4 inches tall at the tallest point of the
handle.
The pitcher weighs 336 grams or 11.9 regular ounces.
