Description
3 3/8” long, 3 1/16” wide.1.2 troy ounces.
This is the earliest Coin silver comb I have seen in over 40 years. It was made by John Schuyler Walter who worked in New York City 1811-35. Most of the coin silver combs I have seen and owned over the years are somewhat later, usually unsigned, and probably imports. The condition is very good, except for two starts of cracks one about 1/4” and one about 1/8”. I am not sure why the cracks have started, but I guess it is a little like early sugar tongs, in any case the piece is still very sound.
It is engraved “CC”. To learn more about the silversmith and a comparison of the marks available on line: Google American Silversmiths, click on the first result, and you can also see the marks by googling “Sterling Flatware Fashions” a very useful site.
